Which social media platform was originally called 'TheFacebook'?

The story behind the answer

The social media platform originally called “TheFacebook” is Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook on February 4, 2004, while he was a student at Harvard University. Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes helped develop and expand the service. It began as a directory-like social network limited to Harvard students, then spread to other universities in the United States and Canada.

The original name reflected the printed or online “face books” that helped students identify classmates. In 2005, the company dropped “The” after acquiring the Facebook.com domain name. The shorter name became the identity of the rapidly expanding network.

People sometimes confuse TheFacebook with Facemash, an earlier Harvard project Zuckerberg created in 2003. Facemash was a rating site and was not the direct name of Facebook. Another modern distinction is ownership: Facebook remains the name of the social network, while Meta Platforms is the parent company that adopted the name Meta in 2021.
