Meta Platforms returned to a $1 trillion market capitalization in February 2024 after a major stock rally. The company, formerly called Facebook, benefited from stronger advertising results, cost reductions, and renewed investor confidence.
Meta operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. In 2021 it changed its corporate name from Facebook, Inc. to Meta Platforms, Inc., signaling an emphasis on virtual and augmented reality alongside social networking. The stock later recovered from a steep 2022 decline, when investors worried about economic conditions and heavy spending on the metaverse.
Meta’s market capitalization is calculated from its share price and outstanding shares, so the trillion-dollar level can be crossed or lost without a corporate restructuring. The milestone does not mean each individual app is separately valued at $1 trillion; they are businesses within the same publicly traded parent company.
