Which snooker tournament is one of the sport’s Triple Crown events and was first held in 1927?
Answer
World Snooker Championship
Answer
World Snooker Championship
The World Snooker Championship is the Triple Crown event first held in 1927.
The championship was established by the governing body then known as the Billiards Association and Control Council. Joe Davis won the inaugural tournament, beginning a remarkable period of dominance in which he captured the title repeatedly.
The event is snooker’s most prestigious world championship and is played over an extended format that tests endurance as well as tactical and technical skill. Since 1977, its modern final-stage venue has been Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, a fact that has made the tournament closely associated with the venue.
The other commonly recognised Triple Crown events are the UK Championship and the Masters. They should not be confused with the World Championship: the UK Championship began in 1977, while the Masters began in 1975.
