Which snooker player won the inaugural UK Championship in 1977?
Answer
Patsy Fagan
Answer
Patsy Fagan
Patsy Fagan won the inaugural UK Championship in 1977.
Fagan defeated Doug Mountjoy 12–9 in the final at the Tower Circus in Blackpool. The tournament was initially called the United Kingdom Championship and was created as a major professional event for players affiliated with the governing association.
The UK Championship later became one of snooker’s Triple Crown tournaments, alongside the World Championship and the Masters. Its format, venue and sponsorship changed over the decades, but the event remained a central part of the professional calendar.
Fagan’s title is sometimes overlooked because he did not go on to build a career record comparable with the sport’s dominant champions. Nevertheless, he remains the first name on the UK Championship roll of honour.
