Which snooker player won the 1986 World Championship, beating Steve Davis in the final?

The story behind the answer

Joe Johnson won the 1986 World Snooker Championship, beating Steve Davis in the final.

Johnson entered the tournament as a qualifier and defeated Davis 18–12 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. His victory was one of the largest surprises in World Championship history because Davis was the defending champion and had been heavily favoured.

The result was especially notable because Johnson had never previously won a ranking tournament. He reached the final by defeating Terry Griffiths in the semi-final, while Davis overcame defending champion Dennis Taylor in the other semi-final.

Johnson’s victory is sometimes confused with the 1985 final, when Davis lost to Taylor 18–17 in one of snooker’s most famous matches. The 1986 final was less dramatic in score but equally memorable for the qualifier’s unexpected triumph.
