Which snooker player made the first maximum break at the Crucible Theatre?

The story behind the answer

Cliff Thorburn made the first maximum break at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.

Thorburn completed the 147 during the 1983 World Snooker Championship, in a second-round match against Terry Griffiths. It was the first maximum break in the history of the World Championship and the first to be made at the Crucible.

The achievement was shown on television and became a landmark moment for televised snooker. Thorburn’s break was also the first officially recognised maximum at the World Championship, although earlier professional claims and unofficial milestones are sometimes mentioned in historical accounts.

Thorburn was a Canadian professional who won the World Championship in 1980. His 1983 147 is distinct from Steve Davis’s first officially recognised professional maximum in 1982 and Ronnie O’Sullivan’s record-fast maximum in 1997.
