Which SNL sketch features Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon as Austrian bodybuilders?
Answer
Hans and Franz
Answer
Hans and Franz
“Hans and Franz” is the SNL sketch featuring Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon as Austrian bodybuilders. The recurring segment was formally called “Pumping Up with Hans & Franz,” and Carvey played Hans while Nealon played Franz.
The pair parody the exaggerated physiques, accents, poses, and motivational rhetoric associated with bodybuilder and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wearing padded muscles and gray sweatsuits, they boast about their strength while insulting anyone they consider physically inferior. Schwarzenegger’s competition-era images appear as part of the sketch’s set.
Carvey and Nealon developed the characters in 1987 while on a comedy tour. The idea reportedly emerged in a Des Moines, Iowa, hotel room after Nealon watched a Schwarzenegger television interview. The first Hans and Franz sketch aired during the season premiere of SNL’s 13th season.
The sketch ended after Carvey left the show, though the characters returned for later appearances, including a 1994 episode hosted by Carvey and a 2014 series of State Farm commercials with Aaron Rodgers.
