Which snake is considered the most venomous?

The story behind the answer

The inland taipan is considered the most venomous snake.

The inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) has the most toxic venom measured among snakes when comparisons use median lethal dose tests in mice. Its venom is exceptionally effective against warm-blooded prey, especially the small mammals that make up much of its diet. A single bite can deliver enough venom to be potentially fatal to many people without rapid medical treatment.

Despite the alternative name “fierce snake,” the inland taipan is usually shy and reclusive. It lives in remote, semiarid regions of central and eastern Australia and generally tries to escape rather than confront people. Human encounters are rare, so it is not necessarily the snake responsible for the most deaths.

Venom toxicity and real-world danger are different measures. The king cobra delivers a large quantity of venom, while the black mamba is fast and medically dangerous. Older lists also sometimes name Belcher’s sea snake, but those comparisons mixed different testing methods. The inland taipan remains the standard canonical answer for most venomous snake by venom potency.
