Nabisco introduced Oreo cookies in the United States in 1912.
Oreo was launched by the National Biscuit Company, commonly known as Nabisco, as a chocolate sandwich cookie with a sweet creme filling. The product first appeared in stores in March 1912 and was initially sold in a round tin.
The cookie's design and branding changed over time, but its basic structure remained recognizable: two chocolate wafers surrounding a creme center. Nabisco later promoted Oreo internationally, making it one of the most widely recognized packaged cookies.
People sometimes confuse Nabisco with Mondelez International, the company that owns the Oreo brand today. Nabisco was the original introducing company; Mondelez became the later corporate owner after Kraft Foods split in 2012. The cookie's launch also predates many modern packaged snack brands.
