Samsung recalled the Galaxy Note 7 worldwide in 2016 after reports that some phones overheated because of defective batteries.
The phone launched in August 2016 and was marketed as a premium large-screen smartphone with a stylus. Soon after release, some lithium-ion battery cells overheated and caught fire during charging or use. Samsung first recalled the original devices and issued replacement phones.
Replacement devices also experienced fires, so Samsung ended production and recalled every Note 7. Airlines and aviation regulators warned passengers not to switch on or charge the phone aboard aircraft. Samsung later attributed the incidents to battery defects involving both the original and replacement suppliers.
The Galaxy Note 7 is sometimes confused with the Galaxy S7, which was a different 2016 model and was not withdrawn in the same global recall. The incident became one of the most prominent consumer-electronics recalls in smartphone history.
