Which Slovenian lake is famous for its island church and cliffside castle? Lake Bled. This glacial lake surrounds a small island topped by the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church, while Bled Castle stands dramatically on a rocky cliff above the water.
Lake Bled lies beside the town of Bled in northwestern Slovenia, near the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park. The castle’s earliest documented mention dates to 1011, when German King Henry II granted the estate to the Bishop of Brixen. The church on the island developed from earlier religious sites and became the landmark most associated with the lake.
Visitors traditionally reach the island in a wooden boat called a pletna. The island has 99 stone steps, and a local wedding custom says that a groom should carry his bride up them. Another popular tradition involves ringing the church bell for good luck.
Lake Como and Lake Garda are famous Italian lakes, not Slovenian ones. Lake Bohinj is also in Slovenia, but it has no island church and cliff-top castle pairing like the one that identifies Lake Bled.
