Dubai's Burj Khalifa became famous for a New Year's Eve fireworks display in 2010.
The display marked the official opening of the skyscraper, which was inaugurated on January 4, 2010. Burj Khalifa is in Downtown Dubai and was designed by the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith as the architect credited for the design.
Its height made the celebration especially striking: the tower rises 828 metres to its architectural top and remains the world's tallest building. Fireworks and later multimedia displays have used the facade and surrounding area as a giant vertical stage.
A frequent mix-up is to confuse Burj Khalifa with Burj Al Arab, Dubai's sail-shaped luxury hotel. They are separate landmarks, and the New Year's Eve spectacle described here centers on the skyscraper named Burj Khalifa.
