George Michael won the 1989 Grammy Award for Album of the Year with Faith.

Faith was Michael’s first solo album after his success with Wham! and became one of the biggest pop releases of the late 1980s. At the 31st Annual Grammy Awards, the album’s title track also won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The record blended pop, soul, rock, and R&B while allowing Michael to play many of the instruments and control much of the production. Its songs included “Father Figure,” “One More Try,” and “Monkey,” all of which became major singles.

The award is sometimes confused with Record of the Year because “Faith” was a major single. Album of the Year honored the complete album, whereas Record of the Year at that ceremony went to Bobby McFerrin for “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”
