Stevie Wonder co-wrote “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)” before Aretha Franklin made it a hit.
Wonder wrote the song with Morris Broadnax and Clarence Paul. He recorded his own version in 1967, but it was not released as a single and did not appear on an album until the 1977 anthology Looking Back.
Franklin’s recording was released in November 1973 on her album Let Me in Your Life. Produced by Arif Mardin and Jerry Wexler, it became one of her biggest crossover successes, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 3 on the Hot 100 in February 1974.
A common mix-up is treating Wonder as the sole songwriter. He is the best-known contributor, but Broadnax and Paul also share the official writing credit.
