Which silent film actress was known as 'The Vamp'?

The silent film actress known as “The Vamp” was Theda Bara. The nickname came from her hugely successful femme-fatale roles, especially her 1915 breakthrough film A Fool There Was.

“The Vamp” was short for “vampire,” but it meant a seductive, morally dangerous woman rather than an undead creature. Bara’s performances helped popularize the vamp archetype in early American cinema, influencing later portrayals of glamorous and manipulative screen villains.

Bara was born Theodosia Burr Goodman in Cincinnati in 1885. Fox Studios manufactured an exotic public persona for her, falsely promoting her as an Egyptian-born woman with occult interests. This publicity made her seem mysterious and foreign, even though she was an Ohio native.

Most of Bara’s films are now lost, including the 1917 Cleopatra. She made 43 films between 1914 and 1926, but her fame declined after leaving Fox.
