Which siege was the last major military action of the American Revolutionary War?
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
Answer
Siege of Yorktown
The Siege of Yorktown was the last major military action of the American Revolutionary War.
The siege took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American forces under General George Washington joined French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, while the French navy helped prevent British relief. Their combined army surrounded the British position commanded by General Charles Cornwallis.
Washington’s forces captured key defensive positions and tightened the siege with artillery and trenches. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781. The victory effectively ended major fighting in North America, although the war did not formally conclude until the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783.
Yorktown is sometimes called the last battle of the Revolution, but “siege” is more precise because the campaign involved encirclement, bombardment, and the capture of fortified positions. British troops and naval forces remained elsewhere, so fighting and negotiations continued after Cornwallis’s surrender.
