Instagram video was seen as competing with Vine, the short-video app that had become popular for six-second looping clips. Instagram introduced video sharing in June 2013, allowing users to record and post clips directly inside the main Instagram app.
The timing made the comparison natural. Vine had launched in early 2013 and built its identity around extremely short, looping videos. Instagram already had a large photo-sharing audience, filters, editing tools, and Facebook ownership, so adding video gave it an immediate way to challenge Vine’s momentum without requiring users to move to another social network.
Instagram video was not identical to Vine. Its early clips could run for up to 15 seconds and could be edited from multiple segments, while Vine centered on six-second loops. Instagram also added video-specific filters. Vine later shut down as a standalone service in 2017, while Instagram continued expanding video into Stories, Reels, and longer uploads.
