Sherlock Holmes inspired House’s name and relationship with Wilson in House M.D.
The series deliberately adapts elements of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories into a medical setting. Gregory House resembles Holmes through his exceptional deductive reasoning, abrasive manner, drug use, musical interests, and tendency to solve puzzles that other professionals cannot.
The parallel also appears in the names: “House” resembles “Holmes,” while James Wilson echoes Dr. John Watson, Holmes’s friend and narrative counterpart. Wilson is not a literal medical version of every Watson trait, but he serves as House’s trusted companion and moral counterweight.
House M.D. is not a direct retelling of a particular Holmes mystery. Its patients, hospital cases, and continuing character stories are original to the television series. The Holmes connection is an acknowledged structural and thematic influence rather than the show’s setting or plot being copied wholesale.
