Which Sherlock Holmes character inspired Dr. James Wilson in House M.D.?

Dr. James Wilson is the House M.D. counterpart to Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes inspiration behind the series.

House is modeled partly on Sherlock Holmes, while Wilson fills a Watson-like role as the trusted friend who listens to House, questions his decisions, and helps the audience understand his unusual reasoning. Wilson is also a doctor, specifically an oncologist, rather than a detective.
