Which Sherlock co-creator also plays Mycroft Holmes?

Mark Gatiss, one of Sherlock’s co-creators, plays Mycroft Holmes.

Gatiss developed the modern television adaptation with Steven Moffat, another Doctor Who writer and Holmes fan. Their concept moved Sherlock Holmes from Victorian London into the present day, allowing deductions to involve texting, websites, GPS and modern forensic methods while preserving the original characters and relationships.

In the series, Gatiss portrays Mycroft as Sherlock’s older brother and a powerful, highly intelligent figure with links to the British government and secret services. Mycroft is less interested in physical investigation than Sherlock, but he can outthink his younger brother and often understands his motives better than anyone else.

The casting creates an extra connection between the character and the production: Gatiss is not merely an actor in the programme, but also a writer, executive producer and co-creator. Paul McGuigan, Stephen Thompson and Steven Moffat were also important contributors, but they do not play Mycroft. The role is sometimes misremembered because Moffat is equally prominent behind the scenes.
