Which shark is famous for its jaws that can extend outward to seize prey?

The story behind the answer

The goblin shark is famous for jaws that can extend outward to seize prey.

Its long, flattened snout contains electroreceptors that detect weak electrical signals from animals in the deep sea. When prey is close, the shark rapidly projects its highly mobile jaws forward, creating a dramatic slingshot-like feeding action. The jaws then retract as the teeth hold the prey.

Goblin sharks are usually found on continental slopes and other deep-water habitats, commonly hundreds of metres below the surface. Their flabby bodies and pinkish coloration reflect a life in darkness rather than the streamlined form of fast-swimming surface sharks.

The species was first described from a specimen collected near Japan in 1898. Its scientific name, Mitsukurina owstoni, honors zoologist Kakichi Mitsukuri and collector Alan Owston. The goblin shark is sometimes called a living fossil because its lineage is ancient, but that phrase does not mean modern individuals are unchanged fossils.
