Which Sesame Street Muppet is famous for his love of cookies? Cookie Monster is the famous blue Muppet whose enormous appetite gives him his name.

Cookie Monster appeared in the earliest Sesame Street era and became known for his deep voice, googly eyes, messy eating and distinctive “Om nom nom” style. His signature song, “C Is for Cookie,” first aired during the 1971–72 season and helped make the character’s food obsession part of popular culture.

The character’s appetite is broader than cookies: he has been shown eating fruits, vegetables and even nonfood objects. Sesame Street later emphasized that cookies are “a sometimes food,” a health-conscious message that did not change his identity or name.

A common mix-up is confusing Cookie Monster with other Sesame Street characters who enjoy food. Oscar the Grouch is associated with his trash can, Big Bird with his childlike curiosity, and Elmo with his enthusiastic personality. Cookie Monster is the one specifically defined by his love of cookies.
