AMD was the semiconductor company founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., known as AMD, was established on May 1, 1969, by a team led by Jerry Sanders. Sanders had been a Fairchild Semiconductor executive, and the new company began as a supplier and designer of semiconductor products. His energetic leadership helped shape AMD’s identity during its early decades.
AMD initially competed in the broader semiconductor market, producing logic chips and other components. Over time, it became especially important in microprocessors, challenging Intel in personal computers and servers. Its modern product families include Ryzen processors, Radeon graphics products and EPYC server chips.
The date and founder are useful clues because several major chip companies emerged from Silicon Valley around the same period. Intel was founded one year earlier, in 1968, by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. Micron and Broadcom have different origins and founding stories. AMD’s name is short for Advanced Micro Devices, and its headquarters are now in Santa Clara, California.
