George visits the church and begins the process, treating a major religious commitment as a workaround for a romantic obstacle. The plot becomes even stranger when Kramer accompanies him and attracts the attention of Sister Roberta, a Latvian Orthodox novice. The priests explain that Kramer possesses the “kavorka,” an irresistible quality that makes women fall for him.

To counter Kramer’s effect, the priests tell him to wear foul-smelling foods. His odor eventually destroys Sister Roberta’s attraction just before George is due to receive his final benediction. George does complete the conversion, but the effort is immediately undermined when Sasha tells him she is moving to Latvia for a year.

“The Conversion” is the 11th episode of season five and first aired on December 16, 1993. The episode’s Latvian Orthodox church was fictionalized for the script, although the exterior church shots used the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
