Which seasons of the show were filmed in color?

The story behind the answer

The seasons of The Andy Griffith Show filmed in color were seasons six through eight. The sitcom ran for eight seasons, from 1960 to 1968, and changed from black and white to color beginning with its sixth season.

The first five seasons contained 159 black-and-white episodes. The final three seasons produced 90 color episodes, giving the complete series 249 half-hour episodes. The color transition reflected the broader move by American network television toward color production during the mid-1960s.

A common mix-up is assuming that the show became color in season five because the change occurred after several successful years on CBS. In fact, season five was still entirely black and white. The color episodes cover seasons six, seven, and eight, including the show's final season in 1967–1968.

The format change did not alter the fictional setting: Mayberry remained the same small North Carolina community, with Andy Taylor, Aunt Bee, Opie, and other familiar characters continuing into the color years.
