Google News provides news results aggregated from thousands of sources. It is a news-aggregation service developed by Google, rather than a conventional search engine that indexes the whole web.
The service began as a beta in September 2002, based on an idea developed by Google researcher Krishna Bharat. Instead of presenting one set of web pages, it groups links to reporting from publishers and magazines, helping readers compare coverage of the same event.
Google News is commonly confused with Google Search’s News tab, but they are related rather than identical products. Google Search can surface news among ordinary web results, while Google News is specifically organized around current stories, publishers, topics, and personalized feeds.
Its coverage has expanded internationally and across many languages. Google also added news-archive features, including access to historical newspaper material, making the service useful for both breaking stories and researching older events.
