Which search engine did Snowflake acquire in 2023?

The story behind the answer

Snowflake acquired the search engine Neeva in 2023.

Neeva was founded in 2019 by former Google executive Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan. It positioned itself as a privacy-focused alternative to ad-supported search, emphasizing an ad-free experience and limiting the tracking associated with conventional search platforms. Its results combined information from partners such as Microsoft Bing, Yelp, and Apple Maps with data from Neeva’s own crawler.

In May 2023, Snowflake announced that it would acquire Neeva for approximately $185.4 million in cash. Snowflake was interested in using Neeva’s search and generative-AI technology to improve search within its Data Cloud. Neeva’s consumer search service shut down on June 2, 2023, and Ramaswamy later became Snowflake’s CEO. A common mix-up is confusing Neeva with other short-lived search projects such as Cuil or Kosmix; those were not the company Snowflake bought.
