Which sea receives the Nile River at its northern end?

The story behind the answer

The Nile River reaches the Mediterranean Sea through its delta in northern Egypt. The Nile Delta is a broad, fertile triangle where the river divides into distributaries before entering the sea.

The Nile has two principal tributaries, the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The White Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, while the Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. They meet at Khartoum in Sudan, after which the main river flows north through Egypt.

For thousands of years, annual flooding deposited nutrient-rich silt across the valley and delta. Modern dams, especially the Aswan High Dam, greatly changed the river’s flow and reduced natural flooding downstream.

The Nile is often described as the world’s longest river, although some measurements comparing it with the Amazon produce debate. Its northern outlet, however, is unambiguous: the Mediterranean basin.
