Which sea lies along the Sahara Desert’s northeastern edge?

The story behind the answer

The Red Sea lies along the Sahara Desert’s northeastern edge.

The sea separates northeastern Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. On the African side, its western shore borders Egypt and Sudan, while the Sahara extends inland across much of Egypt and other parts of North Africa. The Gulf of Suez forms its northern connection with the Mediterranean region.

The Red Sea is a long, narrow body of seawater created by the separation of the African and Arabian tectonic plates. Its surroundings are extremely arid, and desert landscapes reach close to the coast in several places.

The Red Sea should not be confused with the Mediterranean Sea, which borders the Sahara farther north. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west, while the Red Sea is the major marine feature on the desert’s northeastern side.
