Which sea is the lowest land surface on Earth’s continents?
Answer
Dead Sea
Answer
Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is the lowest land surface on Earth’s continents.
The Dead Sea is a salt lake between Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Its shoreline is roughly 430 metres below sea level, although the exact elevation changes as the lake shrinks. The lake has no outlet; water enters mainly from the Jordan River and is lost through evaporation, leaving a very high concentration of dissolved salts and minerals.
That salinity makes the water much denser than ordinary seawater, allowing swimmers to float easily. It also prevents most aquatic life from surviving there, although salt-tolerant microorganisms can exist. The lake has been declining for decades because water is diverted from the Jordan River and nearby sources, while evaporation remains intense. Sinkholes have appeared around exposed shorelines. The Dead Sea is not technically a sea connected to an ocean; it is a terminal lake, and its name reflects its strikingly salty, lifeless appearance.
