Which sea is bordered by Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia?

The story behind the answer

Which sea is bordered by Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia? The Mediterranean Sea. It is an intercontinental sea between southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia.

The Mediterranean is almost enclosed by land. Europe forms much of its northern shore, North Africa lies to the south, and Anatolia and the Levant form much of its eastern boundary. Its only natural connection to the Atlantic Ocean is the Strait of Gibraltar, which is about 14 kilometers wide at its narrowest point.

The sea has shaped trade, migration, empires, and cultures for thousands of years. Ancient Greek, Roman, Phoenician, Arab, and Ottoman networks all used its waters. The Suez Canal later connected it to the Red Sea, creating a major route between Europe and the Indian Ocean.

The Red Sea is a frequent distractor because it also borders Africa and Asia, but it does not reach Europe. The Black Sea is connected through Turkish straits, yet it lies northeast of the Mediterranean and is a separate sea.
