Which sea connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar?
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar.
The strait is a narrow natural passage between southern Spain and northern Morocco. At its narrowest, it is about 14 kilometres wide, allowing exchange between the Mediterranean basin and the Atlantic. The Mediterranean is almost enclosed by Europe, Africa, and Asia, with additional connections to the Black Sea through the Dardanelles, Sea of Marmara, and Bosporus.
Its name comes from the Latin mediterraneus, meaning “inland” or “in the middle of the lands.” The sea has been central to the histories of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Phoenicia, and many later civilizations.
The Mediterranean is comparatively salty and has high evaporation, especially in its eastern basin. It includes distinctive subregions such as the Adriatic, Aegean, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian seas.
