Which sea connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal?
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
Answer
Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea connects with the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.
The Mediterranean lies between Europe, Africa and Asia. Its eastern connection to the Indian Ocean is not direct: ships travel from the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, into the Red Sea, and then through the Gulf of Aden to the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. This route avoids the much longer journey around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.
The modern Suez Canal opened in 1869 after construction led by the Suez Canal Company. It is a sea-level waterway without locks, running across Egypt between Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and Suez on the Gulf of Suez. The canal became one of the world’s most important commercial shipping routes.
The Mediterranean is also linked to the Atlantic through the Strait of Gibraltar. The Red Sea is the waterway immediately south of the canal, so it is a plausible but incorrect answer when the question asks which sea lies at the canal’s northern end.
