Gian Lorenzo Bernini created the marble group for the Cornaro Chapel in Rome between 1647 and 1652. It represents a passage from Saint Teresa of Ávila’s writings in which an angel pierces her heart with a golden spear, producing a profound spiritual experience.

Bernini combined sculpture, architecture, painting, and hidden lighting to create a theatrical Baroque setting. Saint Teresa reclines on a cloud while an angel holds the spear, and members of the Cornaro family appear in illusionistic theater boxes on the chapel’s side walls.

The work is sometimes described simply as a vision or a transverberation, but its established title is The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. The sculpture is still in Santa Maria della Vittoria, where the Cornaro Chapel was built to house it.
