Gutzon Borglum designed the colossal heads of four U.S. presidents on Mount Rushmore.

Borglum began work on the South Dakota monument in 1927 after an earlier proposal for nearby Needles was abandoned. The mountain displays George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Borglum chose the presidential subjects and directed the project until his death in 1941.

Workers used drilling, blasting, and finishing tools to carve the granite. The completed faces are each about 18 meters high, and the monument was declared finished in October 1941, although Borglum’s larger plans included additional features that were never completed.

The site is a national memorial rather than a naturally formed rock feature. Borglum’s son, Lincoln Borglum, helped supervise the final work after his father died.
