Kay Vess is the playable scoundrel protagonist of Star Wars Outlaws.
Kay is a young thief from Cantonica who becomes entangled with the criminal underworld after a heist against the syndicate Zerek Besh goes wrong. With a death mark placed on her, she steals the starship Trailblazer and travels to Toshara, where she begins assembling a crew and seeking a way to escape the syndicates pursuing her.
The game is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a period that lets the story focus on bounty hunters, smugglers, and rival crime factions rather than making the Rebel Alliance the central subject. Kay was designed as a resourceful underdog rather than a trained soldier or Jedi.
A common mix-up is confusing Kay with established Star Wars underworld characters such as Qi'ra. Kay is an original character created for Outlaws, portrayed through voice and performance capture by Humberly González. Her small merqaal companion Nix is central to her adventures, but Nix is not the playable protagonist.
