Edinburgh is especially famous for its multi-day Hogmanay New Year celebration.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay developed into a major organized festival featuring torchlight processions, concerts, street parties, and fireworks. The word Hogmanay refers to the Scottish celebration of New Year’s Eve, although its exact linguistic origin remains uncertain.
The city’s events make use of prominent landmarks and streets, including Princes Street and the area beneath Edinburgh Castle. Large crowds gather for the midnight fireworks, while concerts and other activities continue across several days around the New Year.
Hogmanay includes customs shared across Scotland, such as first-footing. Traditionally, the first person to enter a home after midnight was expected to bring symbolic gifts, often including coal, shortbread, salt, or whisky. Customs differ by region and family, so no single gift is universal.
