Edinburgh hosts the large annual Hogmanay street celebration in Scotland.
Hogmanay is the Scottish term for New Year's Eve and the surrounding celebrations. Edinburgh's event developed into a major international festival featuring a torchlight procession, concerts, dancing, and a large street party beneath Edinburgh Castle.
The modern festival is especially associated with the countdown on Princes Street and fireworks viewed against the castle. It has helped make Edinburgh one of the world's most recognizable destinations for New Year's celebrations.
Scottish New Year customs also include first-footing, in which the first person to enter a household after midnight is traditionally expected to bring symbolic gifts such as coal, shortbread, or whisky. Hogmanay is therefore broader than a single fireworks event.
