Edinburgh hosts the famous Hogmanay New Year's Eve festival centered on Princes Street.
Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of the new year, and Edinburgh's version developed into a large public festival featuring concerts, street parties, torchlight events, and a midnight fireworks display. Princes Street, beside Edinburgh Castle and the city's central New Town, has been one of the festival's best-known settings.
The modern organized celebration grew especially after large-scale public events were introduced in the 1990s. It became internationally recognized for combining Scottish music and customs with a major urban countdown. Attendance rules and event layouts have changed over time, particularly when organizers manage crowd safety or respond to severe weather.
Hogmanay is broader than a single Edinburgh event. Customs associated with Scottish New Year include singing “Auld Lang Syne” and first-footing, in which the first visitor to enter a home after midnight traditionally brings symbolic gifts for good luck.
