Edinburgh hosts one of the world’s best-known Hogmanay New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Hogmanay is the Scots word for New Year’s Eve and, more broadly, for Scottish New Year customs. Edinburgh’s modern celebration developed into a major public festival featuring a torchlight procession, street events, concerts, and a midnight fireworks display near Edinburgh Castle.
The city’s setting gives the event a distinctive visual identity. The castle overlooks the central festival area, while the surrounding Old Town and New Town provide historic streets and large public spaces. The program can vary by year, but the main celebration is centered on the transition from December 31 to January 1.
Hogmanay customs also include first-footing, in which the first person to enter a home after midnight is traditionally associated with the household’s luck. Edinburgh’s event is sometimes confused with Glasgow’s celebrations, but Edinburgh is the Scottish city most internationally identified with a large, organized Hogmanay festival.
