Which Scotland Yard inspector frequently assists Sherlock Holmes in the original stories?

The story behind the answer

Inspector Lestrade frequently assists Sherlock Holmes in the original stories.

Lestrade is a Scotland Yard detective who appears in several Holmes investigations. He represents official police work and often brings Holmes into cases when ordinary procedures have not produced a solution. Although Lestrade can be skeptical or impatient, he recognizes Holmes’s extraordinary ability and sometimes depends on his conclusions.

Lestrade is introduced in A Study in Scarlet alongside another Yard detective, Gregson. Their names are often mentioned together because both investigators compete to solve cases and both can overlook evidence that Holmes notices. Lestrade, however, becomes the more enduring recurring police figure in the canon.

Later adaptations vary his first name, appearance, rank, and relationship with Holmes. Doyle’s stories usually identify him simply as Inspector Lestrade. He is not Holmes’s superior or partner; he remains a police investigator who collaborates with the consulting detective when a case calls for unusual analytical skill.
