Which scientist won Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry?

The story behind the answer

Marie Curie won Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry. She received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, making her the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences.

Curie shared the Physics prize with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel for research into radioactivity. Her Chemistry prize recognized the discovery of the elements polonium and radium, the isolation of radium, and the study of its compounds. She coined or popularized important scientific work around the term radioactivity.

Curie was born Maria Skłodowska in Warsaw in 1867 and conducted much of her scientific career in France. Her daughter Irène Joliot-Curie later won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Marie Curie’s achievements are sometimes confused with those of Linus Pauling, who won two Nobels in different categories but not in two sciences.
