Which school in Zealand did Hans Christian Andersen attend after receiving Jonas Collin’s support?

The story behind the answer

Hans Christian Andersen attended Slagelse Latin School after receiving support connected with Jonas Collin.

Andersen left Odense for Copenhagen in 1819, but his early theatrical ambitions were uncertain. Jonas Collin, a director associated with the Royal Danish Theatre, recognized his potential and helped arrange an education. Andersen studied first at Slagelse and later at a school in Elsinore before continuing his education in Copenhagen.

School was difficult for Andersen. He was older than many classmates, had already experienced years of irregular education, and later recalled the period as emotionally painful. Even so, the education gave him access to literature and helped prepare him for a career beyond the stage.

Slagelse is sometimes confused with Elsinore because Andersen attended both schools. Slagelse Latin School was the earlier institution in this important stage of his formal education.
