Which saxophonist is featured on Aretha Franklin's 'Freeway of Love'?

The story behind the answer

Clarence Clemons is the saxophonist featured on Aretha Franklin’s “Freeway of Love.”

Clemons was best known as the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, where his large stage presence earned him the nickname “the Big Man.” His appearance on Franklin’s 1985 recording created a striking bridge between her soul-pop sound and the harder-edged rock energy associated with Springsteen.

“Freeway of Love” was written by Jeffrey Cohen and Narada Michael Walden, who also produced it. Clemons played saxophone as a guest musician, and he also appeared prominently in the song’s music video.

Listeners sometimes confuse him with David Sanborn because Sanborn was another prominent saxophone session player who worked with major pop and R&B artists. Sanborn was not the saxophonist credited on this track.
