Pandora was the Saturn moon discovered in Voyager 1 images in 1980.
Pandora is a small outer shepherd moon of Saturn’s F ring. It was discovered in images taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft, and its discovery was announced in 1980. The moon’s name comes from Pandora of Greek mythology, linking the astronomical object to the same figure associated with the famous container.
Pandora’s irregular, elongated shape and low density distinguish it from Saturn’s larger spherical moons. Its gravitational relationship with the F ring is also notable: Pandora and Prometheus help shepherd and shape the narrow ring system.
The moon is often confused with Prometheus because both names belong to figures in the same mythological tradition and both are associated with Saturn’s F ring. Prometheus was discovered earlier, while Pandora was identified in Voyager 1 imagery in 1980.
