Which Sarracenia species is known as the yellow pitcher plant? Sarracenia flava is the yellow pitcher plant.

Its name reflects the tall, trumpet-shaped pitchers, which are often bright yellow-green and may exceed 1 metre in exceptional plants. The species is native to wet habitats across the southeastern United States, from southern Alabama through Florida and Georgia to the Carolinas and coastal Virginia.

Like other Sarracenia, it captures insects in modified leaves. Nectar and visual markings attract prey, while slippery inner walls, downward-pointing hairs and digestive fluid make escape difficult. A lid, or operculum, helps keep heavy rain from diluting the pitcher contents.

A common mix-up is confusing Sarracenia flava with S. leucophylla, the white pitcherplant. S. flava can have red markings and several colour varieties, but its standard common name is based on the generally yellow pitchers. It also hybridizes naturally with other species, including S. purpurea and S. leucophylla.
