Which Sanskrit poet and playwright wrote Abhijnanashakuntalam?

The story behind the answer

Kalidasa wrote Abhijnanashakuntalam, the celebrated Sanskrit play also known as The Recognition of Shakuntala. He is regarded as one of classical India’s greatest poets and dramatists.

The play adapts the story of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta, whose relationship is disrupted by a curse that causes the king to forget her. A lost ring eventually restores his memory, leading to recognition and reunion. Kalidasa’s version reshapes material from the Mahabharata into an elegant drama of love, separation, memory and reconciliation.

Kalidasa probably lived during the Gupta era, most often placed in the fourth or fifth century CE, though his biography and dates remain uncertain. Abhijnanashakuntalam was among the earliest Sanskrit works to gain wide European attention after translation. Readers sometimes confuse Kalidasa with Bhasa, another important Sanskrit dramatist; Bhasa is credited with plays such as Svapnavasavadatta, not this work.
