Salvador Dalí’s 1946 painting showing Saint Anthony resisting a procession of temptations is The Temptation of Saint Anthony.

The painting depicts Saint Anthony kneeling in a barren landscape while a line of animals advances toward him. The animals carry symbolic burdens, including wealth, power, sensuality and other worldly desires. Their impossibly long, spindly legs create the unstable, dreamlike effect associated with Dalí’s mature Surrealism.

Dalí painted the work for a competition organized by the Belgian film company Loew’s. Although he did not win, the painting became one of his best-known religiously themed works. It is now held by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

The title is sometimes confused with depictions of Saint Anthony by Hieronymus Bosch or Gustave Flaubert’s literary treatment of the subject. Dalí’s version is specifically dated 1946.
