Which Salvador Dalí museum opened in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1982?
Answer
The Dalí Museum
Answer
The Dalí Museum
The Dalí Museum opened in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1982.
The museum houses one of the largest collections of Salvador Dalí’s work outside Europe. It was founded by A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, American collectors who began acquiring Dalí’s art in the 1940s. Their collection eventually became the foundation of the museum.
The institution first opened in a smaller waterfront building in 1982. In 2011 it moved to a larger building designed by architect Yann Weymouth. The current structure is known for its glass enclosure, called the “Enigma,” and its storm-resistant construction.
The Florida museum should not be confused with the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, Spain. Figueres is Dalí’s hometown museum and burial site; St. Petersburg is the major American home of the Morse collection.
