Which Saint Lucian poet and playwright won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992?

The story behind the answer

Derek Walcott, the Saint Lucian poet and playwright, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.

Born in Castries, Saint Lucia, in 1930, Walcott became one of the Caribbean’s most important English-language writers. His poetry explores colonialism, slavery, migration, landscape, memory, and the difficulty—and creative power—of belonging to several cultural traditions at once.

His best-known long poem, Omeros, published in 1990, reworks themes from Homer’s epics through Caribbean characters and settings. Walcott also wrote influential plays, including Dream on Monkey Mountain and Henri Christophe: A Chronicle in Seven Scenes.

The Nobel citation praised his poetry’s luminosity, historical vision, and multicultural commitment. Walcott became the first Caribbean writer to receive the literature prize. V. S. Naipaul, another Caribbean-born Nobel laureate, won later, in 2001, but he was born in Trinidad rather than Saint Lucia.
